John Terry to make Chelsea return for charity match

John Terry will make a return to Chelsea by playing in a charity football match at Stamford Bridge.

The former captain won five Premier League titles during his time at the club, as well as the Champions League in 2012.

Terry, who also skippered England during his playing career, retired last year after spending his final season with Aston Villa in the Championship.

The 38-year-old is now assistant to manager Dean Smith at Villa Park but will be pulling on his boots again for Soccer Aid on June 16.

Terry will represent an England side managed by Sam Allardyce and television presenter Susanna Reid, wearing the number 26 shirt and playing alongside Mo Farah and Jamie Redknapp.

Being back at Stamford Bridge will of course be very significant for me…

Real Madrid take on Manchester City, Bayern Munich to face Atletico Madrid

Real Madrid have been paired with Manchester City in the Champions League semi-finals, while Bayern Munich will face Atletico Madrid.

Friday s draw in Nyon means outgoing City manager Manuel Pellegrini will have a chance to get one over his former team, having coached Madrid in 2009-10.

Madrid who saw off Wolfsburg in the quarter-finals lost to Juventus in the 2014-15 semi-finals. They won the competition in 2013-14, beating cross-city rivals Atletico 4-1 after extra-time for their 10th European Cup triumph.

City, meanwhile, are the rookies in the semi-finals, having never made it to this stage before. They failed to advance past the round of 16 in 2013-14 and 2014-15, but accounted for Dynamo Kyiv and Paris Saint-Germain on the way to the semi-finals this seas…

Rummenigge: Bayern ready to welcome Hoeness back

Uli Hoeness will be welcomed back as Bayern Munich president whenever he is ready to take the role, according to chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Hoeness resigned from the position in 2014 after being found guilty of tax evasion, the former Germany international subsequently sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

Karl Hopfner replaced Hoeness as president, but Rummenigge says he will step aside when the former incumbent is ready to return to the Allianz Arena.

When Uli Hoeness want to be president again Bayern is ready to welcome him, he told Kicker.

I would not be surprised if he wants to run for president again.

In this case, the very sympathetic Karl Hopfner would waive his candidacy. Everything would be done my mutual agreement.…

Barnsley expelled from FA Cup after fielding ineligible player in Horsham replay

Barnsley have been expelled from the FA Cup for fielding an ineligible player in their first-round replay against Horsham.

Seventh-tier Horsham will now progress to round two, where they will visit League Two strugglers Sutton.

The Tykes were 3-0 winners in last Tuesday’s replay, after the first game had finished 3-3 at Oakwell, but have since acknowledged a “regrettable”, “unintentional” error that has seen them kicked out of this season’s competition by the Football Association.

A club statement read: “Today the FA has advised us that we will no longer be able to participate in the FA Cup this season.

“An administrative error was brought to our attention regarding the eligibility of a player who played in last Tuesday’s game with Horsh…

Bayern Munich 4 Freiburg 1: Robben stars as champions bid farewell to Lahm and Alonso

Bayern Munich bade farewell to Philipp Lahm and Xabi Alonso in fitting fashion with a 4-1 win over Freiburg on the final day of the Bundesliga season.

Arjen Robben, Arturo Vidal, Franck Ribery and Joshua Kimmich sealed a 25th win of the season for the champions and ensured they went a whole league campaign without defeat at the Allianz Arena for the first time since 2008.

The match was largely a tribute act to club captain Lahm and Alonso, however, who played their final matches before retiring from respective glittering careers.

Past greats of the club were presented to the crowd prior to kick-off before Lahm, ahead of his 517th appearance for Bayern, was granted a special tribute involving flowers, a golf bag and a mosaic in the stands with the message from a c…

De Bruyne excited to work with ´top striker´ Haaland at Man City

Kevin De Bruyne says he is excited to work with top striker Erling Haaland at Manchester City, admitting the arrival of the 21-year-old might enable him to build on his already impressive assist figures.

De Bruyne was named Premier League Player of the Season as City won their fourth top-flight title in five seasons last month, with the midfielder top-scoring for Pep Guardiola s men with 15 league goals during the 2021-22 campaign, also adding eight assists.

Despite his impressive goalscoring return, the Belgian fell some way short of his tally of 20 Premier League assists in the 2019 -20 campaign (a joint single-season record in the competition, along with Thierry Henry in 2002-03) – but De Bruyne s attempts to record similar figures in the future could be aided by t…

United need “five or six” top players – Gary Neville

Speaking after Manchester United s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said his old club need to sign five or six top players to fix all the problems that have been plaguing them.

Neville, who has always been supportive of his ex-teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, said United went about the right way in the summer regarding three signings Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, but he believes much more is needed to make the team properly competitive. Apparently, the 20-time English champions need another top class centre-back, a left-back, two central midfielders, a wide attacker and an out-and-out striker.

Neville sees the fact that the club have changed managers with relative frequency since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and …

Havertz wants to repay Tuchel backing and learn from Sterling at Chelsea

Kai Havertz hopes to repay the trust of Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea in the absence of Romelu Lukaku, while the Germany international cannot wait to learn from Raheem Sterling.

Tuchel has previously used Havertz as a false nine to lead the Blues line, with Lukaku either injured or unselected, but the striker scored just eight times in 29 Premier League appearances last season.

With Lukaku returning to Inter on loan, Tuchel ruling out a move for Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski joining Barcelona, Havertz will likely be tasked with the role up top once more.

Though the former Bayer Leverkusen star acknowledged he did not expect the positional switch, Havertz is aiming to make the role his own and give Tuchel reason to have faith in him.

I ve played a l…

Mascherano hopes Neymar returns to Barcelona

Former Barcelona star Javier Mascherano hopes Paris Saint-Germain s Neymar returns to the LaLiga champions to play alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Neymar swapped Barca for PSG in a world-record €222million transfer in 2017 but the Brazilian superstar has been regularly linked with a Camp Nou comeback.

The 28-year-old forward spent four years at Barca, where he won two LaLiga titles and the Champions League among other honours.

Mascherano was team-mates with Neymar when Barca claimed the 2014-15 Champions League trophy via a 3-1 win over Juventus in Berlin and the ex-Argentina captain reflected on that successful night at Olympiastadion.

The other day, I watched the final in Berlin again and what the three up front created was impressive, Neyma…
